Having an appreciation and understanding for the flood risk is the first step. Once armed with the facts, you will be in a much stronger position make informed decisions or apply mitigative measures to reduce the impacts of flooding.
Flood Zones take into account fluvial (river) and tidal (sea) flooding only. There is no regard for pluvial (surface water) flood risk at all. Your property may be in Flood Zone 1, whilst being at significant risk from surface water flooding.
