Flood Risk Assessment in Devon

FloodPlan were approached and commissioned by an independent developer / landowner to provide a Flood Risk Assessment for a proposed development in Devon. The site is located within Flood Zone 3.

The site is an existing agricultural use field located in an area at risk from fluvial (river) flooding. The development proposed the construction of an agricultural use barn.

Floodplan contacted the Environment Agency to obtain the latest hydraulic flood modelling data available. Floodplan assessed the the flood depths, velocities, hazard ratings as well as other considerations such as the speed of flooding onset. The flood modelling identified that the site was considered to be at risk from circa 0.8m of flooding during the extreme ‘design event’.

Floodplan used GIS software package ‘QGIS’ to assess the maximum modelled flood levels against LiDAR. Upon inspection, there was potential to relocate the proposed barn to a different location on the same field and take the proposal out of flood risk.

The Flood Risk Assessment was submitted to the Planning Authority for review, and accepted. Planning Permission was granted.
